WON 2-1

A wonderful start to their Epsom career. The girls were tough and competitive, putting Haileybury under constant pressure throughout the 1st half. Epsom created good chances through some excellent midfield passing by Katie Evans (M) and Farrah Stephens-Martin (M), linking up with the high players Charlotte Thesiger (R) and Sophie Edison (M). Unfortunately, Haileybury had a strong and composed defence and they were able to see off the Epsom attack, leaving it goalless at half time. In the second half the game really opened up, with Haileybury pressing hard initially. Maddie Wearne (Cr), Lucy Picken (Wh) and Polly Campbell (Rv) were immense at the back, showing real composure and strong tackling technique when called upon, while goalkeeper Delphine Ayitey-Hammond (Rv) made a couple of strong clearances. They were then able to find Epsom’s midfield who were then able to attack with gusto. Ella Parson (Rv) and Stephens-Martin really started dominating midfield and getting beyond the Haileybury defence. The deadlock was finally broken about half way through the second half with another devastating break by Stephens-Martin who crossed in from the right and the first time shot was tucked away by Edison on the far left post. The second goal was scored with another break down the right wing, and Parson dribbled into the D to have her well-struck shot deflected into the goal off the back of a defender’s stick. Haileybury were a good side and did not give up. They won a short corner one minute from time and converted to make the score a respectable 2-1. A very promising first performance from everybody.
