Epsom College Boys-U15B vs  Cranleigh School

Drew 24-24

A classic on the Chuds with two evenly matched teams playing a narrow brand of rugby with dominance largely determined by the slope. Epsom defended within their 22, up the hill, for much of the first half as Cranleigh built a 17 point lead. Epsom's tackling was much improved and both teams were competitive at the breakdown. A crucial try with the last play of the half gave Epsom belief and momentum heading into the second half. Epsom kicked well to secure territory allowing the pack to carry the ball relentlessly: Will Hartopp (Fa), consistently elusive, and Oliver Carr-White (Fa), direct and effective, particularly stood out this week but from numbers 1-8 Epsom worked doggedly in search of the ball and in support of the ball-carriers. The backs' role was mostly defensive and they deserve great credit for the way they repeatedly brought down the rangy Cranleigh danger-men. Epsom took a 7 point lead going into the last ten minutes but a resurgent Cranleigh were able to cross the line and convert with the last play of the game to level the score at 24 apiece. Frustrating, but a fair reflection of the game.

Tries: Hughes (G) x2; Carr-White (Fa), Hartopp (Fa)
