Match Report
Epsom College 1st XV vs  Hurstpierpoint College
On: Saturday, 01 Dec 2018
Venue: at Home

Lost 7-10

Two much-changed sides greeted each other nine days after the NatWest Champions Trophy game, in a close encounter that could have gone either way. A wet morning provided a slick environment for players and the ball, and both teams were evenly matched throughout the first half. Hurstpierpoint eventually went over through a driving maul with five minutes to go in the first half. Going into the second half, Epsom knew they had to improve their execution and discipline, as the chances were being created. Some tremendous ball retention and phase play eventually resulted in Jonny Haynes (G) being put in by Shaun How Teo (Fa) out wide. James Webster (Fa) converted to make it 7-7. Some further close play certainly made it seem as if this rematch was destined for a draw. However, some ill-discipline from Epsom gave Hurstpierpoint a penalty with the last kick of the game, which they duly converted to make it 10-7. Some very good performances from those making their first step up to 1st XV level, especially with half an eye towards next season. A tough week lies ahead, with Wellington in the NatWest Champions Trophy final at Allianz Park on Wednesday, and finishing off the season next Saturday with a rematch against local rivals St John's at home.

Try: Haynes (G)

Player of the Match: James Webster (Fa)
