Epsom College Girls-U13A vs  The Portsmouth Grammar School
On: Saturday, 19 Jan 2019
Venue: at Home

WON 18-16

The girls knew the PGS match would be much tighter after a narrow one goal win as U12s last year, and so it proved. The PGs girls displayed excellent first and second stage defence, so Epsom had to use their attacking options wisely. Outstanding back up by Amy Henwood (Hu) and Grace Gardner (GH) proved crucial, with credit going to the Epsom attack for using their heads and not forcing the ball into the shooting D. A first quarter score of 5-6 left the girls fired up for the second quarter. They took it to PGS and kept calm, despite strong physical pressure, and drew the second quarter 6-6. Turnover was required to gain the advantage and this came via a PGS held ball call from defensive centre pass pressure. The goal was not converted however, but Amy Henwood was sensational as WD, creating interception after interception, whilst shooters Eva Sesay (Hu) and Amelia Burke (Wa) began to dominate in the shooting D as the squad went into the fourth quarter finally with a narrow one goal lead. This team is gutsy and determined - pressure caused errors and there was scrappy play from both sides, but Epsom were not giving up the win easily. Eva and Amelia showed composure when they needed it most, the centre court attack played intelligently at crucial times and the defensive wall at the back gave the squad confidence to finish with a well-deserved, solid victory. Well done girls!
