Surrey Schools' Tournament

Epsom's U14 squad, captained by Polly Campbell (Rv), approached the Surrey Schools' tournament with slight trepidation, being a newly formed squad, but they attacked their first match against a strong Emmanuel side with great confidence. Four nil down at half time they regrouped and placed tactical pressure on the Goal Attack to win the second half 2-1, finishing the match in buoyant mood.
A stern test against St Teresa’s followed. Epsom were shell shocked by their fast attacking flair, and were forced into many frustrating errors to trail 6-1 at half time. However, once again tactical changes helped and led to a very strong second half with an 8-2 final score, which was to become the heaviest loss of the day.
A confidence boosting 10-0 win against Sutton High followed, with excellent shooting from Amelia Thomson (Wh) and Ella Parson (Rv).
The next 2 matches against Alleyn's and Rosebery followed a similar pattern, with 6-2 and 6-1 losses respectively.
The girls were running low on energy for their final match against Putney. However, their resilience shone through and they were determined to improve on their previous results. They established much cleaner patterns of play, with great attacking linkage between Anouska Powell (W) and Sophie Norman (Wh) and the defence of Delphine Ayitey-Hammond (Rv), Furaha Wasunna (W) and Polly Campbell (Rv) were superb in winning turnovers for Epsom. The girls really took the match to Putney and with a minute to go looked like they would secure their second win. Cruelly, Putney took advantage of one Epsom error and secured a 6-5 win in the final seconds, and actually qualified for the Surrey Schools' Finals. This shows how competitive Epsom actually were on minimal training, with their defensive record is to be applauded and much to be positive about for the season ahead.
