Drew 20-20

On a beautiful autumn morning the in-form U12As continued their progress against an athletic and muscular Reigate side. After a superbly observed minute’s silence, remembering fallen heroes from both schools, Epsom won the toss and impressively accepted the trickier conditions on the trademark sloping Chuds pitch. The boys defended stoutly in the opening exchanges as they fought against the prevailing wind. The forward pack contained the dynamic visitors until a few under-resourced breakdowns led to break away tries for Reigate. Oscar Lent (Wa) then changed the game with a typically evasive and courageous score. Another try for Reigate meant that at half time the boys were down 5-20. A positive discussion ensued amongst the players with a determination to use the slope with some tactical kicking, mixed in with the team’s usual offloading style. With Casper Curran (Wa) dictating the tempo from fly half and Dougal Freeman (Hu) appearing to be everywhere, the game began to change. Suddenly, Jacob Elliott (GH), Fin Stirling (Wa) and Ollie Crabb (GH) started dominating at the breakdown and the pressure began to show on Reigate. Further tries by Ben Berry (GH) and the dynamic Freeman moved the boys to within touching distance. A series of scores seemed possible with Nikolas Moen (Hu) and William New (Wa) now working well in the loose. Some game-changing tackling by Louis Simmons (Hu) and John Warfield (GH), coupled with a series of elusive runs by Jack Weekley (Wa), kept the boys battling hard before a solo try of the highest quality by Lent, running on to collect his own delicate kick, saw the game end in a tie. The boys should be proud to hold a strong opponent despite missing key personnel.

Tries: Lent (Wa) x2, Berry (GH), Freeman (Hu)

Player of the Match: Caspar Curran (Wa)
