Match Report
Epsom College 1st VII vs  Hurstpierpoint College Girls-U18B
On: Thursday, 14 Feb 2019
Venue: at Home

WON 34-26

A close game throughout, with a draw in the first quarter, a win for Epsom in the second quarter, a win for Hurstpierpoint in the third quarter and a final quarter that was all to play for. It was clear the game would be evenly matched from the start with the score going goal for goal in the first quarter. In the second quarter pressure by Ebube Akojie (Wh) and Jennifer Phizackerley (Cr) in circle defence saw Hurstpierpoint struggling to score and Epsom gaining the rebounds. The ball was played through the court well and the Epsom attack was calm and controlled, with excellent decision making allowing the ball to be fed to shooters Ellie Thwaites (M) and India Binnie (R), who rarely missed. Epsom pulled ahead by six goals. Hurstpierpoint came back strongly in the third quarter and pulled back the difference to just two. The start of the fourth quarter was again goal for goal, but the Epsom girls found a new burst of energy to defend strongly through the court and win crucial interceptions. With reliable shooting by Ellie and India the girls were able to pull ahead and had a run of goals to take them 8 goals in front and get the win. No single player of the match for this game - great all round play by every girl. Hannah Palmer (M) took her game up a level, with great decision making and more calm and controlled play. India Binnie played a full game out at Goal Attack for the first time and saw marked improvement in her unit play. Ellie Thwaites remained strong against a physical Goal Keeper, never fazed and with a shooting accuracy that was excellent. In at Centre, Elisabeth Phizackerley (Cr) played intelligently, linking the play through court well. Grace Crompton (R) as Wing Defence used her speed and agility to take numerous interceptions that did not seem possible. Lastly, Jennifer Phizackerley played her first full game at Goal Defence and partnered well with Ebube Akojie. Despite not having played in that combination before they worked incredibly well as a unit and in particular were really strong at marking the Hurstpierpoint shots and putting them under considerable pressure. Well done all.
