Epsom College 1st XV vs  Wellington College
On: Wednesday, 05 Dec 2018
Venue: Away

Lost 16-24

The 1st XV finished their NatWest Champions trophy campaign with a close loss against a strong Wellington side. The game was a contrast of two styles, Wellington taking a more direct route while Epsom looked to move the ball around. Things got off to a rocky start after Wellington gained possession in Epsom's 22 after a poor exit execution, and they used their imposing size to use route one to score. Epsom regathered themselves and eventually Jack Jesty (G) put two penalties over to make it 7-6 at half time.
Wellington again used route one to score at the start of the second half, but at 12-6 Jesty then slotted another penalty close the gap to 12-9. He was then on the end of a turnover try as TJ Williams (P) stole the ball, Jonny Haynes (G) made an incisive break through the Wellington line, offloaded to Bertie Bamber (Fa) who then put Jesty through. The conversion took Epsom into the lead at 16-12. Wellington responded with two tries of their own to make the final score 24-16. A great performance in the final, but if you want to win such games then the finer margins are where advantages and disadvantages are found. A rematch with St John's lies ahead to end the season.
