WON 46-7

During the buoyant post-match debrief, in which each of the players was asked to select a personal highlight from the game, two things were of note. The first was the number of moments of individual brilliance: tries resulting from chip and chases - Freddie Daniels (F); cross-field kicks - Caius Luckyn-Malone (F); a try-saving tackle by Arthur Tatham (Rn); consistently good handling despite the greasy conditions. The second, and most important, was that none of the players chose a moment in which they themselves were the star. This stands as a perfect symbol of the extent to which this group of players has started to play together as a team. A moment that exemplified this was when Ed Marriott (C) dummied from the scrum half position to go clear at the halfway line. He made it all the way to the 5 metre line under his own steam before popping the ball to Vlad Drobnokhod (G) who scored. This passage of play included clever thinking, athleticism and selflessness, which were the chief characteristics of the team’s performance. They kept spectacular shape throughout the match and showed their high level of confidence by insisting on playing the ball through the hands, notwithstanding the inclement weather. Not only did this take a high level of skill, it also showed that the players believe in their ability and trust themselves to implement what they have practised in training. This is enormously gratifying and bodes well for the remainder of the season.

Tries: Drobnokhod (G) x2, Daniels (F) x2, Woods (Fa) x2; Lodge (C), Luckyn-Malone (F)

Player of the Match: Ed Marriott (C)
