1st Place

v St John’s (final) WON 9-3

It was a very cold day for netball and the girls were slow to get going. They had an initial three matches in their group against St John’s, Westbourne House and Cranleigh. In the first of these matches against St John’s they crowded space, rushed passes and did not play their game but they managed to get the win thanks mainly to impressive shooting by Sophie Long (Wa). They took coaching tips on board going into the second match and played much better through court, with Phoebe Lyes (Hu) in particular making an impact in a change of position as wing attack. The improved play resulted in a comfortable win against Westbourne. In the final match of the initial round, against Cranleigh, the determination to win was far more evident and the girls worked hard to secure an unbeaten group stage. They faced a strong Highfield in the semi final. By half time the score was equal. Solid defence by Madeleine O’Brien (GH) and Olivia Diri (Hu) was key, and they tirelessly turned over ball to give Epsom the chance of the win. At the final whistle the girls had won by just one goal.

Going into the final the girls again met St John’s. Rallied by great play in their semi-final, St John’s started strongly, however the Epsom girls played their best netball and calmly pulled ahead. A full team effort through court in both attack and defence, coupled with great shooting by Mia Herbert (GH) and Sophie Long secured a 9-3 win and 1st place in the tournament.
